Meet The Leonard Family
The Leonards: Beth, Marianne, Stew Sr., Jill, Tom and Stew Jr.
Our Founder, Stew Sr.
Stew Leonard’s was founded by Stew Leonard Sr. with the vision of selling fresh-bottled milk and a few other grocery items in a farm-like retail environment. Stew intertwined this love of the dairy business and marketing with his core philosophies of quality, integrity and empowerment, which have shaped the mission of the company. He also believes that everyone should have fun in his store—customers and Team Members alike. Though retired, he continues to set an example that his children and Team Members follow.
Marianne Leonard has spent the last 56 years as wife, mother, nurturer, adviser, amateur chef, critic and advocate. Her influence has often been indirect but tremendously valued: She has never been shy to tell her husband or her kids how they can do their jobs better or provide better service to customers. Marianne is an avid cook and her recipes are tested in our kitchens, adapted to large-scale production, and made daily from scratch in all our stores. Customer favorites include lasagna, chicken soup and marinara sauce.
Stew Jr., who grew up in the business and today is the president and chief executive officer of the company, earned an MBA from UCLA. In addition to planning the future of the company, Stew Jr. is the CEO and oversees all operations of each of the stores. Stew Jr. has taken pride in offering our customers the best values that the culinary world has to offer.
Tom Leonard started his career in our Norwalk store and became the founding president of the Danbury location. After successfully overseeing that store, he decided to venture into his own business with the opening of Tom Leonard’s Farmer’s Market in Richmond, Virginia. Today, he serves on the Stew Leonard’s board of directors.
Beth, who holds a masters degree from Middlebury College, studied baking and cheese importing in Paris, France. Beth used these skills to build the largest in-store bakery in the country and has taken her father’s commitment to freshness and top quality to new heights. Today, our stores produce artisan breads, award-winning cookies and cakes, and a huge variety of gourmet cheeses and spreads.
Jill is Stew Leonard’s vice president of culture and communication. She was recently named as one of the top women in grocery by the magazine, Progressive Grocer. A graduate of the University of San Diego, Jill oversees all events, awards and editor of Stew’s News, as well as all internal communications. Jill is known as Stew Leonard’s “keeper of the culture”.
